As the Village of Greenport moves forward with a community-supported revitalization of the Third Street Basketball Courts, the Greenport Mural Project is inviting artists to create “a bold, large-scale public artwork for the court’s perimeter fencing.”
Applications are due Aug. 10.

In May of this year, residents Tod Hart and Collin Ratsey offered to invest $25,000 in a project to embark on several upgrades to the courts, including new nets, backboards and rims, an eight foot high hoop for young children and trees surrounding the perimeter of the property. The project is ultimately expected to cost $42,570.
“This project is about more than basketball,” said Wyndy Sloan, Co-Chair of the Greenport Mural Project. “We’re looking for a design that players will be proud to play beside, neighbors will stop to admire, and visitors will photograph. It’s an opportunity tocreate a lasting work of public art that celebrates the creativity, energy, and spirit of Greenport.”
The Greenport Mural Project is a village beautification effort that completed its first installation — a new mural of sunflowers on the restrooms at the Fifth Street Beach, echoing one that had been there decades ago — earlier this summer.
According to the call for artists, “the mural installation complements the broader improvements planned for the courts, helping transform the space into a vibrant community destination for recreation, gathering, and public art. The selected design will span approximately 100 linear feet and will be digitally reproduced on durable mesh vinyl, transforming the basketball courts into a striking visual landmark.”
The Call for Artists is open to artists working in vector-based digital formats, with local artists especially encouraged to apply. The selected artist will receive a $1,000 stipend and public recognition.
Artists are being asked to submit a portfolio, concept sketch, artist statement, and brief biography through the project’s online application form, and to email greenportmuralproject@gmail.com with the subject line “Basketball Court Inquiry” with any questions.
This is a busy week at the court — the annual Greenport Summer Basketball Tournament, where local kids got a chance to show off their skills and participate in friendly competition with students from throughout the East End, will be held on Saturday, July 25. Participant registration begins at 10 a.m., with opening remarks at 11 a.m. and the first game at 11:30 a.m. Games will run in order of age starting with the youngest age group.
