Celebrating the USCG’s Eagle, and Mitchell Park

As the legendary U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle arrives in Greenport as part of the national Sail250 celebration, the Village of Greenport will welcome residents and visitors with an evening of music, food, family activities, and community spirit during the “Let’s Raise the Rink” Community Picnic on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 6 to 10 p.m. in Mitchell Park.

The Eagle will be open for public tours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, and will be open from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday for tours for members of the military and first responders.

The celebration also marks the 25th anniversary of Mitchell Park, honoring one of Greenport’s most cherished public spaces while launching a community-wide effort to bring back the cillage’s beloved seasonal ice rink.

Admission is free, and all are invited to enjoy an evening on the waterfront while supporting the campaign to raise $100,000 in community donations. Every dollar contributed will be matched, up to $100,000, by Friends of Mitchell Park, doubling the impact of every gift.

“This is a special day for Greenport,” said Mayor Kevin Stuessi. “We’re honored to welcome the U.S. Coast Guard Barque Eagle to our waterfront while celebrating 25 years of Mitchell Park. It’s the perfect opportunity to come together as a community, enjoy everything that makes Greenport unique, and help bring back an amenity that generations of families have enjoyed.”

“Our Co-Chairs Peggy and Lisa have organized an incredible event to bring together community to celebrate,” he said, adding that cadets aboard the Eagle will also be helping plant a garden at the East End Seaport Museum Saturday morning. “We are thrilled to have the NHL Islanders and others participating. Captain Kristopher Enley of the Barque Eagle has been a great partner to the village organizing their wonderful visit and community work.”

The North Fork Arts Center will also host a conversation with Captain Enley and the crew of the Eagle, along with sea shanties by Ethel’s Mermen, Friday evening at 7 p.m. Find Out More.
