Everybody Cleanup
North Fork Audubon Board Members Theresa Dilworth and Carol Edwards will lead a walk through the trails followed by an Earth Day Beach Clean-Up on Saturday, April 18 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Inlet pond County Park, 65275 Route 48, Greenport. Find Out More.
Over on the other fork, the Peconic Baykeeper will lead a Marsh & Shoreline Cleanup on Meadow Lane in Southampton Village on April 18 (Rain Date April 19) from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Meet at the Dune Beach parking lot. Find out more.
Slow Food Celebration at Golden Acres
Slow Food East End holds its Fifth Annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 18 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Golden Acres Organic Farm, 652 Peconic Bay Boulevard, Jamesport.
There will be local food, arts and craft vendors, farmers, educators, Long Island food producers, family activities and music by Julia King. The rain date is Sunday, April 19. Find Out More.
Regeneration at The Parrish
The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will hold an Earth Day Panel Discussion celebrating its latest exhibition, “Regeneration: Long Island’s History of Ecological Art and Care” on Saturday, April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Helen Hsu, Assocate Curator for Research at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, will expand on the environmental facets of Rauschenberg’s practice (he designed the first Earth Day poster) and exhibition artists will discuss their approach to ecological concerns in their work. General admission is $30 and the event is free for members and resident benefits passholders, students and children. More details are here.
Quogue Wildlife Refuge Celebration
The Quogue Wildlife Refuge at 3 Old Country Road in Quogue holds its annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 25 from Noon to 3 p.m. The day’s events include guided birding walks, live ambassador animals, face painting and crafts for kids, self-guided kayaking and canoeing on Old Ice Pond, a native plant sale with the Long Island Native Plant Initiative and a native sapling giveaway from Bartlet Tree Experts. Food trucks from the Hampton Coffee Company and the Land and Sea Smokehouse will be on hand. There will also be recycling events including a prescription drug takeback, ewaste disposal, balloon disposal and household items are being accepted for Habitat for Humanity’s Suffolk ReStore (email tom@habitatliny.org for details). April 25 & 26: Great East End Clean-Up
Southampton Town’s Great East End Clean-Up will be held Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26. Individuals and community groups select an area of public property such as a park, beach, trail or roadside that is in need of cleaning, registering online by April 22 at www.southamptontownny.gov/722/Great-East-End-Clean-Up. The town will provide garbage bags and disposal passes for town recycling centers weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Southampton Town Hall Citizen Response Center on the first floor of Town Hall or the Southampton Town Public Safety & Emergency Management office at 27 Ponquogue Avenue in Hampton Bays (next door to the community center). April 26: Earth Day 5K
The North Fork Environmental Council’s Earth Day 5K Race and Walk will be held on Sunday, April 26 at Indian Island County Park, 105 Cross River Drive, Riverhead. REgistration opens at 9 a.m. and the race begins at 10 a.m. Registration is $15 for youth under 16 years old, $30 for individuals and $80 for a family of four (two adults/two kids).
Proceeds fund the NFEC Scholarship Fund and environmental education programs. Find Out More.
April 24-26: Docs Equinox
Hamptons Doc Fest and the Southampton Arts Center celebrate of Earth Day with their annual Docs Equinox program April 24 to 26. This year’s theme is “Wildlife 360∞: Celebrating All Creatures Great and Small.” It kicks off with wine receptions on Friday and Saturday at 5:30 p.m., and a Sunday coffee/scone reception at 10:30 a.m.
The Friday, April 24 , 7 p.m. film, “Folktales,” directed by Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady, is set at Pasvik Folk High School in Norway, where students learn the challenges of Arctic life by caring for a pack of loyal Siberian huskies. Before the film, professor and naturalist Carl Safina will present a keynote address. The Saturday, April 25 film, at 7 p.m., is “Buck”, about Buck Brannaman, the “horse whisperer,” which was the Sundance Audience Award-winning film in 2011 and honors the spirit of Robert Redford, who directed, produced and starred in “The Horse Whisperer” film. Director Cindy Meehl will Zoom in for a Q&A. The Sunday, April 26, film presentation at 11 a.m. is “Every Little Thing,” about hummingbird rehabilitator Terry Masear, whose goal is to save every tiny, injured hummingbird in Los Angeles. Southold Environmental Expo & Repair Café
Southold Town is holding an Environmental Expo and Repair Café with the North Fork Environmental Council (NFEC) on Saturday, May 2 from Noon to 4 p.m. at the town’s Peconic Lane Recreation Center.
At the NFEC’s Repair Cafés, the public can bring their household items — including small appliances, clothing, toys and bicycles to be repaired, and their knives to be sharpened.
“It’s a great community event, with neighbors helping neighbors to make things work again, with the added bonus of keeping those things out of the waste stream,” said Margaret deCruz, the NFEC Repair Café chair.
Southold’s Waste Management department has been participating in a discounted compost bin and rain barrel sale program for the past year. The sale, open to Southold Town residents (other neighboring towns also have similar programs) is currently underway, online here, and residents can pick up their bins and barrels at the Expo.
Numerous environmental organizations will also have tables at the event. Compost coaches from the Long Island Organics council will give demonstrations and offer tips on how best to compost at home, and organizations ranging from Group for the East End to the Peconic Baykeeper, Peconic Estuary Partnership, ReWild North Fork and UpSculpt will also offere information and inspiration on how to preserve our local natural resources.
