NFEC Talks Sand, Seawalls and Sea Level Rise

The North Fork Environmental Council will hold a Zoom program with environmentalist Kevin McAllister, “An Overview of Coastal Processes, Interventions and Adaptation” on Wednesday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m.
Coastal shorelines are dynamic transitional zones that are regularly altered by the forces of nature, with climate change and rising seas adding a new dimension to coastal living.
Kevin McAllister will address the science, policy and politics which determine the sustainability of coastal wetlands, recreational beaches and the Public Trust Doctrine.
Kevin McAllister’s training and professional experience in coastal zone management (is substantive and diverse.
He holds a Master’s Degree in coastal zone management, where his focus of study was dune management on a developed coastline.
McAllister’s professional experience with coastal resources protection spans three decades and highlighted by his work in South Florida managing major beach/dune restoration projects, and his work for many years as the Peconic Baykeeper.
His current role is a public advocate for clean water and coastal sustainability with Defend H2O, a non-profit he founded in 2014 to protect and restore the environmental quality of groundwater, surface waters, wetlands and beaches on and around Long Island.
The NFEC is a grassroots organization founded in 1972 and dedicated to the preservation of the quality of the resources and way of life that make the North Fork a unique place to live, work and visit.
