PEER Presents “Myth Busting: Separating Fact from Fiction in Single Payer Health Care” at Stony Brook Southampton College
February 29 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pmFree
Progressive East End Reformers, along with several co-sponsors, will present “Myth Busting: Separating Fact from Fiction in Single Payer Health Care” on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Stony Brook University’s Southampton campus in the Chancellor’s Hall auditorium.
Doors open at noon and the forum begins at 1 p.m.
The goal of the event is to educate the public about the myths and fears regarding a Single Payer Health Care System (either federal or state) and how it will impact the quality and cost of their health care and taxes.
A proposed single-payer system passed the New York State Assembly last June in a 91 to 46 vote, but stalled in the State Senate and is being considered again this year.
But New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office, in an attempt to get out ahead of a looming $6 billion budget deficit, has been focused on cutting health care costs to the state, most noticeably so far this year in the form of a 1 percent cut in payments to state Medicaid providers, expected to save the state $248 million this year.
The forum in Southampton will include a Health Care ChArt Gallery, visualizing facts & figures on health costs; a Health Care Story Core — video recording people’s health care experiences; and a moderated panel including Health Care expert Professor Martha Livingston, a representative from New York State, a union member and other people with first-hand knowledge of health care.
