Based on the play by Henrik Ibsen
When Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House premiered in 1879, the character of Nora Helmer became a world-wide symbol of female empowerment. Fascinated by the possibility of symbolizing societal pressures through music, rising star composer Grace Oberhofer has recently developed a new opera based on Ibsen’s revolutionary play. Trapping her female heroine within an ornamental musical web, Ms. Oberhofer uses opera as a revolutionary act to highlight the caustic gender norms that pervade our society. This production will also feature unnerving marionette-inspired choreography by contemporary dancer Sarah Crane and radically surreal staging by Allison Benko.
