SUMMARY:Revel in Dimes play The Stephen Talkhouse
DESCRIPTION:There is boot-stompin’\, soul-shakin’ rock-‘n’-roll — and then there is reveling in Revel in Dimes. This is not The Black Keys and The Red Hot Chili Peppers\, blended together by way of Jack White and a nice hook; this is unmanufactured music that shakes you up and spits you back out\, all ugly and heavy and mean\, the way they invented music to be. SUMMARY:The Dirty Dozen Brass Band plays The Stephen Talkhouse
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 40 years since their founding in 1977\, New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band has taken the traditional foundation of brass band music and incorporated it into a blend of genres including Bebop Jazz\, Funk and R&B/Soul. This unique sound\, described by the band as a ‘musical gumbo\,’ has allowed the Dirty Dozen to tour across 5 continents and 30 countries\, record 12 studio albums and collaborate with a range of artists from Modest Mouse to Widespread Panic to Norah Jones. Forty years later\, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. \nHistory of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band\nIn 1977\, The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud\, but antiquated\, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance\, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands\, early predecessors of jazz as we know it\, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges\, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot\, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late ’70s\, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band\, and over the course of these early gigs\, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue’s name: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

SUMMARY:Dick Dale plays The Stephen Talkhouse
DESCRIPTION:Guitar Legend”/“Rock Guitar” Dick Dale was an avid surfer in the day and was born in Boston Massachusetts in 1937\, moved to California 1954 with his parents and great expectations for a bright future. \nAs a kid he had taught himself to play the drums listening to Gene Krupa. Dale bought his first ukulele\, being left handed and drumming to the beat of Gene Krupa he began strumming left-handed upside down and backwards to a Gene Krupa beat. Dale also loved the genius and playing of Les Paul and the vocals of Mary Ford. Dale also became excited watching his uncle playing the legendary song Misirlou on an Oud instrument. \nDale then learned to play Misirlou on his guitar. He pioneered an entire genre of American music with his unique style of staccato picking and reverb-drenched sound\, which earned him the title as “King of the Surf Guitar” by his surfer buddies. “Dick Dale and the Del-Tones” Re-opened the Famed Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa California and became the star attraction playing nightly to thousands of screaming teenagers. \nDick Dale served as co-designer to Leo Fender and helped create and build the super-powered electronics and equipment that would revolutionize musical instruments and the live and recorded sounds in the 50’s & 60’s. Over a vast career of 50 years\, he has received an extensive number of Lifetime awards and nominated for a Grammy for the music in “Back To The Beach”. \nHe’s been inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame in San Diego\, Hollywood Rock of Fame\, White House Congressional Hall of Records\, and First Presidential Historical Society as a Lifetime Member and voted by over 100\,000 members of his peers into Nashville’s Musicians Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Museum.

SUMMARY:Paula Cole plays The Stephen Talkhouse
DESCRIPTION:It is truly my time now\, at 50.” – Paula Cole. \nMore beautiful than ever\, in a twenty-plus-year-career\, Paula Cole releases “Ballads\,” a twenty-song collection of American jazz and folk classics from the 1930’s to the 1960’s. It is dedicated to her father\, Jim Cole. \nCole started as a jazz singer and now returns\, at nearly 50 years of age\, to pay homage to her first love of jazz and folk. A self-described “mother and human being first\,” Cole is a timeless voice not only in song\, but for those who have felt pain\, and who still stand shining light\, against all odds. \nWith a voice that is big\, rich and gorgeous\, a mind that is intelligent\, and a heart that transforms suffering into beauty\, Paula Cole sings for our enlightenment\, for our souls. “Ballads” is a journey to Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan\, to John Coltrane and Nina Simone\, to Bobbie Gentry and Nancy Wilson\, sung by a stunning Paula Cole we’ve not yet heard. \nPaula Cole is the voice behind Peter Gabriel’s “Secret World Live\,” hits “Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?”\, “I Don’t Want To Wait”\, and the brave\, brazen double platinum album\, “This Fire.” Cole has infused wit and poetry in seven albums of original work over a twenty-plus-year-career. \nIn performance\, Cole gives of herself to such a degree that she elicits tears and gasps and goose bumps from audiences. In her lyrics\, she writes of inner life\, of redemption\, a woman’s perspective; of social justice. As the first woman in history to solely produce and receive the Best Producer Grammy nomination for her work\, This Fire\, Cole broke boundaries with a searcher’s spirit.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Brett Dennen at The Stephen Talkhouse
DESCRIPTION:As common and simple as it is\, “por favor” is such an evocative expression. From Spanish\, it translates to “please\,” a word that suggests a need for something\, a desire to make a change. \n“Por favor’ was something I kept saying every day in the studio\, and I got the other musicians saying it\,” says Brett Dennen. “We were goofing around\, and Dave Cobb\, my producer\, said it should be the title of my new record. I laughed it off at first\, but then I really thought about it. When you say please\, you’re asking something to come into your life. It might mean that you’re weak and need something to make you strong. But you’re admitting to some sort of weakness or some form of humility.” \nThat notion is at the heart of Por Favor\, Dennen’s intimate and revealing new album that Elektra Records released on May 20\, 2016. \nProduced by Cobb\, fresh from his Grammy-winning work with Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell\, the record strips Dennen to his core as a songwriter with nothing to hide. \n“All these songs came from a time of sadness for lots of different reasons. They came at a point when I wasn’t feeling confident about myself\,” he says. “When I’m not feeling confident\, I’m not a nice person to be around. I don’t take care of my health\, my relationships\, my stuff\, and it all cycles into a miserable place. And I have a really hard time admitting that I’m in that place.” \n
