SUMMARY:Racial Justice East End Book Discussion: Finding Latinx
DESCRIPTION:Racial Justice East End hosts a three-part book discussion on Finding Latinx: In Search of the Voices Redefining Latino Identity by Paola Ramos this fall at three locations on the South Fork. \n\n\n\nThe first meeting will be September 22 at Eastville Heritage House on Hampton Rd\, Sag Harbor.  Second\, October 13\, at the UU Congregation of the South Fork on the Bridgehampton Turnpike.  Third\,  November 10 at OLA’s office on Goodfriend Drive\, East Hampton. All sessions are on Tuesdays\, 6-7:30 pm.    \n\n\n\n Register HERE. \n\n\n\nLatinos across the U.S. are redefining identities\, pushing boundaries\, and awakening politically in powerful and surprising ways. Many—Afrolatino\, indigenous\, Muslim\, queer and undocumented\, living in large cities and small towns—are voices who have been chronically overlooked in how the diverse population of almost sixty million Latinos in the U.S. has been represented. No longer.  \n\n\n\nPaola Ramos is an Emmy-Award winning journalist. She is a contributor for Telemundo News and MSNBC\, where she is host of “Field Report.” Ramos is a former Correspondent for Vice News. Before her career as a journalist\, Ramos was Deputy Director of Hispanic Media for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign\, a political appointee during the Obama Administration\, and served in President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign.  \n\n\n\nIn this empowering cross-country travelogue\, journalist and activist Paola Ramos finds communities of people defining the controversial term\, “Latinx.” She introduces us to indigenous Oaxacans who rebuilt the main street in a post-industrial town in upstate New York; “Las Poderosas” who fight for reproductive rights in Texas; as well as drag queens\, environmental activists\, farmworkers\, and migrants detained at our border.  \n\n\n\nCo-sponsors for this discussion include Christ Episcopal Church\, CMEE (Children’s Museum of the East End\, Eastville Community & Historical Society\, HARLI (Hope and Resilience LI) \, Ocean Zendo\, and OLA of Eastern LI..  Founding members are Canio’s Cultural Cafe and Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork.

SUMMARY:Mission Blue Founder Sylvia Earle to Speak at Guild Hall
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Peter Matthiessen Center & Guild Hall \n\n\n\nDr. Sylvia Earle\, renowned marine biologist\, undersea explorer\, and founder of Mission Blue. Dr. Earle’s talk will explore the power of writing to illuminate what we know\, and don’t know\, about the ocean where most life remains hidden in the dark. As she says\, “we believe what we believe based on what we know\, but this is just the beginning of basic understanding.” Joining Dr. Earle is Dr. Carl Safina\, a longtime East End conservationist\, award-winning writer\, founder of the Safina Center\, and “friend of Peter Mattheissen.” \n\n\n\nThe conversation will highlight Sylvia’s collaborative restoration efforts with Stony Brook University and the Shinnecock Bay Hope Spot\, including work undertaken by Dr. Ellen Pikitch and the Indigenous Advisory Council who are working to reintroduce clams to the Shinnecock Bay. These efforts have revived eelgrass\, revealed new roles for microbes\, and underscored humankind’s dependence on the natural world. Shinnecock Bay’s designation as a Mission Blue Hope Spot signifies much more than scientific research and restoration; it signifies the Bay’s cultural\, recreational\, and traditional importance to the Shinnecock people.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: "Obit" at North Fork Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:Every morning\, a small staff of obituary writers at The New York Times deposits the details of three or four extraordinary lives into the cultural memory – each life’s story spun amid the daily beat of war\, politics\, and football scores. \n\n\n\nThere are only a handful of editorial obituary writers in the world\, and none are better than at The Times\, where obits have become some of the best writing in journalism. Documentary storytelling in print. First drafts of contemporary history. Mirrors of life’s great variety\, humor and pathos. Neatly framed vignettes of worlds that will vanish along with their notable stars. \n\n\n\nOBIT is the first documentary to look into the world of editorial obituaries\, via the legendary obit desk at The Times. The film invites some of the most essential questions we ask ourselves about life\, memory and the inevitable passage of time. The writers tell stories of lives lived in extraordinary ways\, often below the radar. With this comes uncommon insights – insights only the rare obituary writer could have – into the passage of generations\, the astonishing cycle of life\, the ebb and flow of time\, and culture as it appears to accelerate and vanish at the same time. \n\n\n\nLongtime obituary editor of The New York Times William McDonald\, and past and present staff writers on the desk are featured: including Bruce Weber\, Margalit Fox\, William Grimes\, Douglas Martin and Paul Vitello.  The Times’ century-old archive (appropriately called the morgue)\, along with its last remaining full-time archivist Jeff Roth\, is also featured. \n\n\n\nTalkback panel guests include “Obit” director Vanessa Gould\, retired New York Times obituary writer Bruce Weber and obituary editor William McDonald.

SUMMARY:Concert Staging of "Talk of the Town" at Bay Street Theater
DESCRIPTION:A concert staging of a new musical inspired by the true story behind the founding of The New Yorker. This staged reading offers a first look at a work in development\, bringing 1920s New York to life through story and song. \n\n\n\nWritten by Eve Potts and Andrew Bentley\, with music and lyrics by Jeffrey Stock\, this concert staging explores the love stories that helped launch one of America’s most iconic publications. At its center are editor Harold Ross and writer Jane Grant\, a bold and forward-thinking woman who helped shape both the magazine and its cultural moment. \n\n\n\nEmerging from the same vibrant literary world that helped define The New Yorker\, the story reflects a cultural moment shaped by voices like Dorothy Parker and brings audiences face to face with figures of the era including Irving Berlin and Alexander Woollcott. \n\n\n\nSet during the Roaring Twenties\, a time of jazz\, artistic energy\, and transformation\, Talk of the Town captures a New York on the brink of becoming the cultural capital of the world. \n\n\n\nThis production offers a rare opportunity to experience a new musical in development and be part of its creative journey. \n\n\n\nThis is a concert staging of a new musical in development. Performers appear with scripts in hand\, allowing the focus to remain on story\, music\, and character. Audience response is an important part of the development process\, making this a unique opportunity to experience a new work as it evolves. \n\n\n\nVIP tickets are available and include an exclusive reception with the creators immediately following the performance\, offering a special opportunity to connect with the artists and gain insight into the development of the musical. \n\n\n\nBack Row 35th Anniversary Special – $35A limited number of back row seats offered in celebration of Bay Street Theater’s 35th Anniversary.

Copies of Surreal: The Extraordinary Life of Gala Dalí will be available for purchase provided by BookHampton\, \n\n\n\nMichèle’s second book\, Surreal\, the long-awaited\, definitive biography of Gala Dalí unmasks this famous yet little-known queen of the twentieth-century art world\, who graced the canvases\, inspired the poetry\, and influenced the careers of her illustrious lovers and husbands with courage\, agency and tenderness. \n\n\n\nUsing previously undiscovered material\, Surreal tells the riveting story of Gala Dalí\, (1894-1982) who broke away from her cultured but penurious background in pre-Revolutionary Russia to live in Paris with both France’s most famous poet Paul Éluard and Max Ernst. By the time she met the budding artist Salvador Dali in 1929\, Gala was known as the Mother of Surrealism. She rapidly became his mentor and protector\, marrying him in 1934 and subsequently engineering their vast fortune. \n\n\n\nAt a time when artists were celebrities\, Gala was an ambassador of the Surrealist movement\, spreading its popularity across the globe. She was the survivor of two world wars\, the Russian revolution and the Spanish Civil War\, and lived between France\, Spain and the U.S. Gala was a heroine whose originality captivated people wherever she went\, and her life story has everything: size; glamour; drama; true love\, twisted love; ambition; money; art; defiance; daring and sweeping social unrest. \n\n\n\nIn this vivid\, detailed rendering\, Michèle Gerber Klein reveals Gala as a charismatic figure who played a pivotal role in cultural history but has not received the recognition she deserves. \n\n\n\nAbout the AuthorMichèle Gerber Klein is an author and philanthropist. Her first biography\, Charles James: Portrait of an Unreasonable Man\, was published by Rizzoli ex Libris in 2018. The Financial Times called it “uproarious\,” and named it a Best Book of the year. \n\n\n\nHer latest work\, Surreal: The Extraordinary Life of Gala Dalí\, published by Harper Collins in April 2025\, tells the riveting life story of Gala Dalí\, Salvador Dalí’s wife\, partner\, and muse. A charismatic\, uninhibited woman\, she drove pre-war Paris’ legendary Surrealist movement where she bore the mantle of ‘the mother of Surrealism.’ As Dalí’s great love\, artistic collaborator\, and the genius behind his vast fortune\, Gala influenced the cultural history of the twentieth century.
