Thousands of people braved brutal temperatures on the Fourth of July to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence that created the United States of America.
We had correspondents from Shelter Island to Southold to Riverhead and Southampton sharing photos throughout the day, but we started our day in our own backyard in New Suffolk, where the New Suffolk Civic Association’s 35-year-old tradition of a small-town parade filled with families and kids in wagons, tractors and local civic groups continued, led down throughout this waterside hamlet by the Cutchogue Fire Department.
The parade also featured the U.S. Submarine Veterans Long Island Base, who come to New Suffolk each year to celebrate the hamlet’s history as the first submarine base in the United States.
This year’s New Suffolk parade included a special treat — the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence this year by former NSCA President Joe McKay, who initiated the tradition in 1991.
