Good Morning!
• Today will be sunny, with a high near 46 degrees but wind chill values between 15 and 25 early, with a north wind 11 to 15 miles per hour. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Tuesday will be partly sunny, with a high near 49, and Wednesday will be mostly sunny and breezy, with a high near 38.
• Art Beisel of Mattituck was the first to report in here of an osprey sighting this year, right on time Saturday morning in James Creek in Mattituck, where the fish hawk was doing a little spring cleaning in Art’s neighbor’s chimney while waiting for his mate to return. Most Long Island ospreys spend their winters in South America, returning from their long trip back north around St. Patrick’s Day.
• President Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget proposal would substantially cut funding for the Department of Energy, which Senator Charles Schumer says will ‘decimate’ Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Beacon’s full story is online here.
• Greenport Village Board elections are tomorrow, March 21, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Third Street Firehouse. Trustees Mary Bess Phillips and Julia Robins are up for re-election, and challengers Paul Kreiling, a sailing instructor, and village planning board member Mary Given are looking to unseat the incumbents.
• We caught up with bandleader Gene Casey this week as he and the Lone Sharks prepare for a concert of mostly original music, packed with special guests, at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on March 25, in conjunction with the release of his new album, “Guitar in the Rain.” The Beacon’s full story is online here.
• Auditions for the North Fork Community Theatre’s May production of “Cabaret” continue tonight at 7 p.m. at the theater on Old Sound Avenue in Mattituck, with callbacks on Wednesday, March 22. If you’d like to audition, prepare 16 bars of a Broadway theater song and be prepared for a dance audition if you’re interested in the roles of the Emcee or Sally or the Ensemble. Leads will also read briefly from the script. You may sing from the score, but not the title song.
• Canio’s Cultural Café’s Irish Film Series continues this evening at 5:15 p.m. at Bridgehampton’s Hampton Library with a screening and discussion of “Jimmy’s Hall,” the story of Jimmy Gralton, leader of the Irish Revoluntionary Workers Group, upon his return to Ireland after a 10 year hiatus.
