Walking to Freedom, Greenport Welcomes New Village Administrator, Letters on Brain Health & Democracy
Good Morning!
• We’re expecting a 60 percent chance of showers today, mainly after 2 p.m., with increasing clouds and a high temperature near 78 degrees, with a calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 miles per hour in the morning. We’re expecting rain and possibly a thunderstorm overnight, with a low around 66. Showers will continue into early Tuesday afternoon, when the high temperature will be around 83 degrees. Wednesday will be sunny, with a high near 64.
• “We’ve gotta continue to walk until all of us are free and we are practicing our civil liberties. You can’t sit down. You’ve gotta keep walking,” said Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church Pastor Natalie Wimberly as she warmed up the crowd for this year’s Juneteenth celebration in Greenport. And walk they did — folks from all over the North Fork, from all walks of life, of every color and creed, with the New York City-based Afro-Brazilian percussion ensemble Mambembé leading the way and Nigerian-American singer Mic Dada lending inspiration to the crowd from the back of CAST’s pickup truck. • After two years without a permanent staff member to run Greenport’s day-to-day affairs, the village welcomed Jenna Butler Esposito as its new Village Administrator in mid-May. We sat down with her for a chat earlier this month to discuss the village services she will oversee and the joys of working in the community where you live. Read More.
• Several people wrote in this week about the importance of brain health, advocating for federal funding for Alzheimer’s diagnosis, research and care, on the Democratic Congressional Primary and the importance of participating in government. Read This Week’s Letters, and send us letters to editor@eastendbeacon.com with “LTE” in the subject line.
• There’s still time to enter the Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild’s annual juried competition, this year titled “The Beauty Of It,” for all artists working in fine art, mixed media and photography, on view Aug. 1 through Sept. 30 at The Guild in Cutchogue. Entries are being accepted through June 30 online here.
