Welcome to The Beacon!
Hello, and welcome to the East End Beacon. We hope the news here will always be fresh and interesting!
It’s easy to see the East End as a fractured assemblage of social stratum gone amuck. There’s the jet set crowd and the helicopter-hater crowd, the North Fork and the South, those of us whose families go back generations and the latest arrivals who want to pull the ladder up on the next influx of people, the Riverhead underachievers (myself included), who bring the chip on their shoulder with them when they go east.
Somehow, someway, there’s gotta be something we all can agree on. The Beacon is looking for that common ground. It’s gotta be here somewhere.
We hope you’ll find our coverage to be as deep as it is wide. There will be plenty of room for arts and humanities here, for environmental and social issues, no matter what side of the issue you’re on, and for writing that will give us all a good think. But we hope we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Life’s too short for that.
We’re not a source for breaking news alerts, and that’s by design. There are plenty of websites on the East End devoted to up to the minute information, if that’s what you’d prefer. Think of the Beacon as a sort of “Week in Review” for the East End, helping you to catch up on and contextualize issues that affect the region as a whole.
We like poetry and literature here too, and if you want to submit a piece of writing for our consideration, by all means do so. Contact editor Beth Young at editor@eastendbeacon.com with submissions or story ideas. We don’t have any money to pay writers now, but when we do, we will.
