What the Dead Know

Novelist A.M. Homes interviews former NYC Chief Medical Examiner, Barbara Butcher about her memoir, What the Dead Know. As one of the first women Medical Examiners in the city, Butcher investigated more than 5,500 death scenes and 680 homicides, as well as the aftermath of the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. Her book charts her twenty-plus year career in a gritty, demanding, and oftentimes, heartbreaking job. The memoir tackles her challenges dealing with her own personal demons as well as those accompanying her work.

Barbara Butcher was chief of staff and director of Forensic Sciences Training at the NYC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. She has directed investigations, evidence, identifications, disaster management and the DNA lab. She lives in New York City.

A. M. Homes is a critically acclaimed novelist whose most recent work is The Unfolding. Her previous books include, This Book Will Save Your Life, which won the 2013 Orange/Women’s Prize for Fiction; Music For Torching; The End of Alice; In a Country of Mothers; and Jack, as well as the short-story collections Days of Awe; Things You Should Know; and The Safety of Objects. Homes also wrote the best selling memoir, The Mistress’s Daughter.
