American Woodcock Courtship Display at SoFo

April 11, 2014 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Join Crystal for a night program about a special sandpiper whose courtship display can be heard and, hopefully, seen in Vineyard Field ─ the American Woodcock.

The American Woodcock hunts, perfectly camouflaged, in wet thickets, moist woods, and brushy swamps for earthworms and other invertebrates but performs an amazing nocturnal courtship display in semi-open fields like the habitat behind the museum.

There will be a short presentation in the museum while we wait for dark before relocating to the upper deck overlooking the field to observe and hear – hopefully – the male woodcock’s acrobatic display. Dress warmly; bring binoculars and a folding/camping chair since we will need to be comfortable and quiet. Rain Date Saturday April 12. For adults & teens.

Leader: Crystal Possehl, SoFo Nature Educator

To make a reservation for this program, please call the museum at 631.537.9735. All SoFo programs are free for members, $7 for adult non-members and $5 for child non-members.
