Eelgrass Bed Restoration with Shinnecock Restoration Program
June 11, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pmFree
It’s that time of year again! Come join the Shinnecock Restoration Program as we help restore eelgrass beds. Eelgrass beds serve as a vital habitat for many different fish and shellfish species in Shinnecock Bay and are currently in significant decline.
Join us at Stony Brook Southampton’s Marine Station on June 11th at 10am as we work together to create ‘Restoration Units’ to help revitalize these habitats in the bay.
This event is open to everyone. Together we will be assembling ‘restoration units’ of adult eelgrass shoots that will be deployed to the Bay to help jumpstart new growth in areas that are in need. Once deployed, these ‘restoration units’ will allow the adult shoots to seed naturally onto the bay floor and continue to grow throughout the season.
Bring your family for a day filled with hands-on activities and the opportunity to meet with members of different research teams who strive to help restore the Shinnecock Bay!
Register and find more information on the Eventbrite page here.
Parking will be on the southern end of the main Stony Brook Southampton lot, near the intersection of Tuckahoe Road and Montauk Highway. Walk across the street and the marine station is on your left-hand side.
**There is an opportunity to assist in the deployment of the finished restoration units by accompanying Dr. Brad Peterson and his lab out into the bay from 12:00pm – 3:00pm June 11th. Seats are limited due to the size of the boat, availability will be on a first come basis.**
**If you’d like to assist in the collection of adult eelgrass shoots, we’d love to know! Collections will be taking place June 6th-10th with Dr. Peterson’s lab. If you are interested please contact Christine Santora at email@example.com**
