Family Beach Exploration with SoFo at Mecox Bay
August 24, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
$10
Exploration Leader: Crystal Possehl, South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Nature Educator
Join Crystal for a family-friendly exploration at Mecox Bay. This location is unique because the salt content of the water varies as a result of the “cut”— the channel dug intermittently between the bay and ocean to keep the bay flushed and healthy. We will explore the amazing biodiversity of life at Mecox Bay, including shells, seaweeds, birds, crustaceans, snails (ever heard of a bubble snail?), and, with the help of our young explorers, use a seining net to find fish and other underwater life. Crystal will bring a variety of implements, including two different tools to use to measure the salt content of the water, binoculars, magnifiers and microscopes, sample jars, shovels, and identification guides for the enjoyment of the whole family.
Advance reservations are required for all SoFo events, which are free for members and cost $10 for adult non-members and $7.50 for child non-members. For more information, reservations, and directions to meeting places, please call: 631.537.9735.
