Family Marine Pollution Beach Cleanup with SoFo
August 6, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
$10
Program Leader: Xylia Serafy, South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) Nature Educator
Did you know that approximately 1.4 billion pounds of trash enter the ocean each year? Solid waste—plastic bags, foam, and other nonbiodegradable items—dumped into the oceans from land or by ships at sea, is frequently mistaken as food and consumed by such animals as marine mammals, fish, and birds, often with fatal effects. On land, an aluminum beverage can takes 100 years to degrade in soil, but 500 years in the ocean! Join Xylia for this beach cleanup while you learn about the different degradation times of each piece of trash and the effect this deadly trash has on our marine ecosystem.
Most SoFo events are $10 for adult non-members, $7.50 for child non-members and free for members, though materials fees may apply. Advance reservations are required for all events. For more information, reservations, and directions to meeting places, please call: 631.537.9735.
