On Eagle’s Beak: A History of the Montauk Point Lighthouse details many facets of the Montauk story, from the settlement of the peninsula and construction of the light station, to the keepers who staffed it until automation and its modern-day operation as a museum. Author Henry Osmers’ discussion and slide presentation will give an overall history of the lighthouse, including how and why the lighthouse was built, the John Milton shipwreck, the present-day threat of erosion, and the structure’s status as a National Historic Landmark.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Montauk Point Lighthouse historian Henry Osmers first visited the lighthouse in 1957 and never forgot the experience. After numerous other visits over the years, he became a tour guide at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum in 2001 and, within a few weeks, was named tour director. He was officially appointed lighthouse historian in 2009. Henry has published four books about the lighthouse and Montauk history: On Eagle’s Beak: A History of the Montauk Point Lighthouse; Living on the Edge: Life at the Montauk Point Lighthouse, 1930-1945; They Were All Strangers: The Wreck of the John Milton at Montauk, New York; and American Gibraltar: Montauk and the Wars of America.

“From Montauk Point”
I stand as on some mighty eagle’s beak,
Eastward the sea absorbing, viewing, (nothing but sea and sky)
The tossing waves, the foam, the ships in the distance,
The wild unrest, the snowy, curling caps—that inbound urge and urge of waves,
Seeking the shores forever.
– Walt Whitman
