Jazz and the Harlem Renaissance at Southampton Arts Center

July 12, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

The Harlem Renaissance was a period of flourishing artistic expression and cultural activity during the 1920s and 1930s. Based in Harlem, New York, the cultural phenomenon saw some of America’s foremost black writers, artists, musicians, and political thinkers emerge at the forefront of American culture. “Harlem, in our minds,” Duke Ellington remembered, had “the world’s most glamorous atmosphere. We had to go there.” This free concert, produced with Jazz at Lincoln Center, will focus on the innovations and achievements of this era and the importance of Harlem in the development of jazz.

Camille Thurman, saxophone/vocals
Sam Reider, piano
Noah Garabedian, bass
Justin Poindexter, guitar
