When Zak signed up for a three-year enlistment with the Marine Corps in 1967, the United States was already well embroiled in the Vietnam War. A native of Queens and a college student at the time, he set off for the jungles of Southeast Asia to fight in a difficult war. During his 13-month tour, he documented his day-to-day life whenever he had access to a camera, capturing images of the Vietnamese countryside, the people he encountered, and his fellow Marines. Fifty-plus years later, he shares these images and describes his experiences.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: A native of Queens, NY, Jim “Zak” Szakmary is a longtime volunteer with the William Floyd Estate and the Suffolk County Historical Society. After retiring from his job as an air-traffic controller, he returned to college in 2009, earning a bachelor’s degree in European history from Stony Brook University in 2013, and a master’s in liberal arts from Empire College in 2018. Zak is also on the board of the Association of Suffolk County Historical Societies.
