The East End Opry presents our Live Music Monday Series at Fresh Hamptons, our featured performer: John Sparrow.
Best known as 1/2 of the duo and band called Black and Sparrow John will be performing solo a group of rarely played originals and select covers. His recording career began in 1972 when he was 19 years old when he was a member of the band “Timber”. Producer Bernie Lawrence (brother of Steve) put the band in RCA Studios in NYC.
“There I was playing a $50.00 acoustic guitar and recording in the same room Elvis had recorded in, and I got to talk to John Denver who was recording in the next room,” he said. “By 1977 when the disco era started dominating the scene I sold my guitars, but in the end of 1979 I heard ‘Sultans of Swing” on the radio and ran out and bought a guitar.”
He started playing the bar scene with the band “Otis,” but his heart was in writing originals not playing covers so he started writing again. By 1982 he had his own band, “Johnny Sparrow & the Vidals,” gigging constantly all over NYC.
