Judith Hudson Exhibition Opening at Tripoli Gallery

June 21, 2014 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Tripoli Gallery presents a solo exhibition of paintings by Judith Hudson spanning from 2012 through 2014. Judith Hudson: A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be on view at 30a Jobs Lane from June 20 to July 13, 2014, with a public reception on Saturday, June 21 from 4 to 6 p.m. This marks Hudson’s first solo exhibition at Tripoli Gallery.

In a series of watercolors, Judith Hudson explores the humorous, X-rated, quixotic and timeless side of  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” As the playwright makes the audience aware of the ridiculous aspects of sex and romance, the artist uses humor as empathy—giving distance and magic the roles of dissolving heartache and finding comedy in the tangled knot of love’s folly.

“Shakespeare is the master of one-liners, which are funny because they are forever relevant and contemporary. When he wrote ‘…truth, reason, and love keep little company together nowadays,’ ‘nowadays’ will always apply. A Midsummer Night’s Dream led me to detours.

Painting Puck got me painting clowns, painting bears and lions led to more fur and feathers, irrational love showed the way to unrequited love, unrequited love prompted other sadnesses in general. The flesh and fur and dreams and antics of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are a bottomless resource, as are the digressions.” —Judith Hudson.

Judith Hudson studied at the University of Colorado where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and went on to study at California College of Art, University of California at Berkeley where she received her Master of Fine Arts. In 1982, Hudson was awarded with a National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been included in solo and group exhibitions at MoMA PS1, The New Museum, Phillips de Pury & Co., Marlborough Gallery, The Drawing Center, and Salomon Contemporary in New York, as well as locally at and The Fireplace Project in East Hampton and The Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill.
