Junk Science Vs. Real Science: How Can We Tell The Difference at Rogers Memorial Library
May 14, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Free
How can someone untrained in science and mathematics make informed judgments about the claims of those who present themselves as experts? Let’s face it. We’re all biased by our own opinions and have a tendency to believe what we want to hear, especially when the science relates to politics or religion. There is no easy answer, but there are strategies we can use to avoid being taken in —not just by deliberate liars, but by sincere advocates of false ideas. Join us for a conversation between a physicist, a nuclear engineer, and a biologist, who will provide examples of junk science, discuss the importance of recognizing what is -— and is not —science, and demonstrate how statistics can be manipulated to stand truth on its head.
