Moths by the Light of the Moon Presentation and Hike at SoFo
July 25, 2015 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm$7
Does the difference between a butterfly and a moth have you perplexed? Do you like to stay up late at night? Curiosity and the ability to keep your eyes open past 8 p.m. will stand you in good stead when you join Nicole Cummings, SoFo Nature Educator, who has been studying moths.
You’ll learn about a moth’s life history, its relationship to butterflies, and how to set up a nighttime, mothing study-site using simple methods that include special lights, a white sheet, and a “sugaring” concoction to attract the moths. After a short presentation, you’ll go out in the moonlight to study, first hand, these night-flying Lepidoptera. This program coincides with National Moth Week—this year from July 18 to July 26— when citizen scientists from all over the world celebrate moths by observing them and gathering data during “moth nights”. Children 8 and older are welcome to attend.
To make a reservation for this program, please call the museum at 631.537.9735. Note: there is a fee for participants who are not current SoFo members ($7/adult, $5/child).
