Opening for Dinah Maxwell Smith’s “Time and Again” at Sag Harbor Whaling Museum

May 2, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Dinah Maxwell Smith: "Time and Again"

Visions of Southampton life. The first of a 2 part series that’s part of the 375th Anniversary of Southampton

Artist statement:

I love Southampton.

When I look at photos taken 100-150 years ago, with few house or buildings, I marvel. I can only imagine what it must have looked like in 1640!

It’s impossible to consider Southampton without its main feature: the ocean. And the beaches. I can go for months without actually going down to the ocean, but I’m always aware of its presence. I can hear it from my house in the village, a mile away. There are seagulls in the parking lots. And, too, the fog and the damp, are constant reminders of its proximity.

I love the history here, both anthropological and geographical. I love the scale, the vegetation, the sandy soil. And, of course, our beloved ocean.

So I paint a lot of people at the beach in their various activites. That’s where I’ve spent a large, formative and enjoyable art of my life.
