Opening for “Elaine de Kooning Portrayed” at Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center
August 9, 2015 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Free
“Elaine de Kooning Portrayed,” an exhibition of self-portraits, likenesses, and reflections on one of the New York School’s most respected painters, who lived from 1918-1989, will be on view at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center from August 6 through October 31, 2015. It features the work of twelve of her colleagues and spans six decades, ranging from an early 1940s drawing by her husband-to-be, Willem de Kooning (they married in 1943), to a 2011 abstract tribute by her friend Paul Harris, whom she met in Provincetown in 1949.
Elaine de Kooning’s longstanding devotion to portraiture is currently being celebrated at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, where the exhibition, “Elaine de Kooning Portraits,” is on view through January 10, 2016. Many of her subjects were her fellow artists, and they often returned the compliment with portraits of her. Those featured in the Pollock-Krasner House exhibition are Robert De Niro, Sr., Alex Katz, Fairfield Porter, Joop Sanders, and Aristodimos Kaldis.
“Elaine de Kooning Portrayed” also includes works by Arshile Gorky, Ray Johnson, Edvard Lieber, Hedda Sterne and Edvins Strautmanis, as well as four of Elaine’s self-portraits. Among the lenders are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the estate of Robert De Niro, Sr., the Jack Shainman Gallery, and private collectors. A fully illustrated catalog with an essay by the distinguished art historian Phyllis Braff accompanies the exhibition. Admission is included with museum admission.
The exhibition and catalog are supported by a generous grant from the Singer Foundation and income from the Pollock-Krasner House Endowment Fund.
