Opening Reception for “Turbulence II,” New Work by Sheryl Budnik at Romany Kramoris Gallery
August 30, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
August 28 – September 18, 2014
Reception: Sat., Aug. 30, 5 to 7 p.m.
Ms. Budnik begin a painting with a mindfulness, an intuition about land or water or a color — sometimes triggered by an art image or research. She uses a palette knife to grab several colors at once and intuitively build the oily skin that shapes the painting, painting generously without hesitation.
“On land, or at the ocean, I look very carefully,” she writes in her artist statement. “The initial idea for a painting could be how
it feels to float at night on the ocean, or walk a field in the sun. Sometimes an idea is a compilation of images from research. The composition is always intuitive and can change mid-stream.”
“When we look carefully at the land or sea, we come to the heart of who we are. These encounters connect us with the earth. The trick is to put that moment in the paint — in the space between the oil color and the canvas. For me, a painting is successful if the pure paint summons the essence of a place and simultaneously astonishes me with its physical expression.
