To honor the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech, the Shelter Island Health and Wellness Alliance and the Shelter Island Public Library are sponsoring an online event on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 5-6:30 pm.

The zoom webinar program was conceived as a follow-up to the student-lead June 14 protest on Shelter Island and will celebrate the speech, but will also explore the continuing necessity to build an equal and just future.

This is not a political event. This is not a rally. The purpose is to create a forum to listen and learn from each other’s experiences. Sponsors seek to generate a dialogue with viewpoints from local panelists, including Cliff Clark, Benjamin Dyett, Julie Karpeh, Aterahme Lawrence and Jose Montalvo, moderated by Shelter Island High School history teacher Peter Miedema.

Everyone is invited to log in to the library’s website to register and participate in an hour of education, music and hope.

To read the speech in its entirety, participants are invited to visit the NAACP website.
