SoMAS Lecture: Basking Sharks at Stony Brook Southampton
On Friday, April 6th at 7:30pm,
Tobey H. Curtis, Ph.D.
 will present a lecture titled:
 “Basking Sharks” – Movements, Habitat
Use, and Conservation of Gentle Giants
in the Duke Lecture Hall of Chancellor’s Hall on the Stony Brook Southampton Campus.

Seminar: 7:30 – 8:30pm

The abstract of the talk appears below. We hope to see you there!

The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the second largest fish in the world, but has been poorly studied in the northwest Atlantic. Given the basking shark’s vulnerable conservation status, and numerous gaps in our understanding of key ecological relationships, we conducted a satellite tagging study to investigate these issues. This talk will summarize the results of the study, the largest of its kind for basking sharks, and address its implications for conservation and fisheries management in the Atlantic Ocean.
