SoMAS Lecture Series: “From Exploration to Exploitation” at Stony Brook Southampton

January 26, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Free

On Friday, January 26th at 7:30pm, Dr. Cindy Van Dover from the Duke University Mairne Lab, Nicholas School of the Environment will present a lecture titled:

“From Exploration to Exploitation: Scientific Opportunities and Imperatives in the Deep Ocean”

in the Duke Lecture Hall of Chancellor’s Hall on the Stony Brook Southampton Campus.

Seminar: 7:30 – 8:30pm

The abstract of the talk appears below. We hope to see you there!

For centuries, the deep sea has been a place unknown, a place of mystery, a place we could not go. But in recent decades, we have learned how to explore in the deep sea. We have made tremendous discoveries about how the ocean crust is formed, the extremes at which life can exist, the extraordinary beauty of deep-sea landscapes. We have also discovered a wealth of minerals on the seabed; there is now a rush to exploit this wealth. More than ever, there is need for science that can inform wise use of deep-sea resources. Dr. Van Dover’s narrative will touch on the history of seafloor exploration and technology, on some of the wonders of the deep sea, and of plans and progress toward seabed mining and the new discipline of deep-sea environmental management.
