Southold ABTF Helen Wright Prince Award Ceremony
October 4, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
The Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force will honor Mattituck School Board member Brian Mealy with the Helen Wright Prince Award for extraordinary leadership in championing civil and human rights by promoting diversity, unity and fairness in Southold Town.
Mr. Mealy, who works at Greenport’s Floyd Memorial Library, will be honored in a public celebration on Peconic Landing on Thursday, Oct. 4 from 6 to 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
“From your leadership with the Mattituck-Cutchogue School Board’s Culture and Diversity Advisory Committee, and with the environmental organization Peconic Green Growth to your efforts as an ESL teacher and to fostering a love for books at the Floyd Memorial Library and at Peconic Landing, we can attest that you constantly build a culture of understanding, compassion and kindness in our community that honors excellence and mutual respect,” wrote ABTF Co-Chairs Valerie Shelby and Sonia Spar in their letter to Mr. Mealy advising him of the award. “Your work and volunteering make you a preeminent candidate for this award.”
Mrs. Helen Prince was a dedicated migrant labor camp teacher from 1949 to 1961 at the Eastern Suffolk Farmers’ Cooperative’s Cutchogue Labor Camp, which was the largest migrant labor camp on Long Island and the only one with a school in New York State.
As a Southold Town native, the ABTF regards her actions as a clear example of commitment to education, fairness and equality, whose bold actions and commitment to equality “can inspire us to relentless commitment and action for the good of our community.”
