Get ready for love! The John Drew Theater at Guild Hall proudly presents the most epic and iconic of Shakespeare’s great romantic tragedies, ROMEO & JULIET, for ten dynamic performances this March. This edgy and contemporary interpretation features a cast of twenty-one actors ranging from bright young high school students to 20-something recent conservatory graduates as well as a few veteran Actor’s Equity professionals thrown into the mix, all coming together on a stage back-lit by trippy projections and drenched in the post-punk aesthetic of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, to re-tell a story that we think we know so well. But this athletic ensemble rigorously mines the gorgeous language and poetry of this monumental play, dives deep into its elemental sensuality, raw violence and sacred and sacramental beauty to unlock all the vibrant color and vitality of this mythic and historic work. It’s an important and impassioned re-telling, singing a message of pure love and compassion in the face of community violence, prejudice and hatred – a message that rings as fresh and true today as when the Bard first penned the play four hundred years ago.
