East Hampton Town opened up the application period June 3 for two initiatives aimed at addressing the community’s housing needs: the 2024 Request for Applications for projects seeking Community Housing Fund and the 2024 Pilot Program for First-Time Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance.

The General Projects RFA is open to individuals, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, Incorporated Villages, and East Hampton Town departments. Eligible projects must result in an increase in or improvement to community housing opportunities within East Hampton and align with the objectives of the East Hampton Town Code and the Peconic Bay Region Community Housing Fund.

Potential projects include the purchase of land or existing homes for community housing, the construction of new homes or rental units, and the maintenance of existing rental units.

“Affordable housing is a critical issue in our town. Whether you are a young person, working family, or a senior creating more affordable housing options is essential for our residents,” said East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez.

This program is funded by the East Hampton Town Community Housing Fund, made possible by the approval of a half-percent tax on real estate transfers passed by East Hampton voters in a 2022 referendum.

“These funding opportunities reflect our continued commitment to addressing the housing needs of our community,” said East Hampton Town Director of Housing & Community Development, Eric Schantz. “By supporting innovative and effective housing projects, we aim to ensure that all residents of East Hampton have access to safe and affordable housing.”

The Pilot First-Time Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance program provides financial assistance for down payments and closing costs, particularly for affordable housing offered through the Town of East Hampton Home Ownership Program.

Under the 2024 Pilot Program, interest-free loans of up to $30,000, with no monthly payments, will be offered. These loans will be repayable in full upon the future sale of the property and secured through a lien on the property.

Applications for the First-Time Homebuyer Down Payment Assistance program will be accepted on a rolling basis from June 3, 2024, through December 31, 2024. Funding will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on available funds, and subject to approval by the East Hampton Town Board after a public hearing.
