MISSION: The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans, waves, and beaches through a powerful activist network. Their Eastern Long Island Chapter is supported by the national organization, which employs nearly 80 people nationwide to help chapters in their campaigns, fight legal battles for our coasts, bring awareness to issues facing our oceans, and provide general critical support to run an effective and responsible non-profit.

Surfrider programs include:

Ocean Friendly Restaurants: this program seeks to enroll local restaurants that are making efforts to reduce their plastic use. Read about the criteria to make an OFR and get involved!

Blue Water Task Force: a volunteer-run, water testing, education and advocacy program that measures bacteria levels at our beaches to alert citizens and officials about water quality problems, then works towards solutions. Know before you go! Sign Up For Water Quality Alert Emails

Ocean Friendly Gardens: urban runoff is the #1 source of ocean pollution. OFG seeks to reduce this by applying the principles of Conservation, Permeability, and Retention to our landscapes and hardscapes. Learn how to use rainwater and native habitat as a resource to protect clean water here. Or visit our new Ocean Friendly Garden at Methodist Lane in East Hampton.

Beach Cleanups: In order to tackle the ocean litter issue- primarily caused by plastic pollution- we implement education for action, citizen science and campaigns around local beach clean ups.

Rise Above Plastics: Change begins on shore. Show your commitment to our oceans, waves, and beaches by making a few simple changes. And, help us encourage our local government to pass legislation that encourages a consciousness of plastics and prevents plastic pollution.
