Book & Bottle on Historic Smithtown at SC Historical Museum
January 8, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
$5
Smithtown was founded in 1665 by an independent and energetic Englishman named Richard Smythe, who along with his wife, Sarah, built a homestead near the mouth of the Nissequogue River. The settlement was known as Smith’s field, Smith’s town, and then Smithtown.
Noel Gish, a retired educator who introduced one of the first high school courses on Long Island History at Hauppauge school district, developed a Long Island studies course for fourth graders, and taught a Long Island Studies Program at Suffolk County Community College, will explore the fascinating history of Smithtown. Mr. Gish also created a teacher training course for Nassau and Suffolk educators for infusing Long Island’s history into the curriculum. He has served as trustee for the Suffolk County Historical Society and the Smithtown Historical Society, and as president of the Board of Trustees for the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport.
Wine and cheese will be served.
