Crossing the Sound

Good Morning! We are purportedly heading to 48 degrees Farenheight today. Enjoy!

• Suffolk County and The Home Depot have teamed up to look for workers in Home Depot’s Riverhead, Shirley, Bellport, Patchogue, Setauket and Selden stores at the County Center in Riverhead tomorrow. Recruiters will be meeting in Riverhead with prospective employees from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The county is also trying to drum up interest in its One Stop Employment Center at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge, which isn’t quite as easy to get to as the Riverhead County Center if you live on the East End and are out of work.

•  Poet, farmer and educator Scott Chaskey will share his poetry and his new book, “SeedTime” with families, children and the public at large at a benefit for the Peconic Community School on the afternoon of Friday, Feb. 28, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the school, 269 Main Road, Aquebogue. There is a $10 suggested donation.

• There’s still time to train for the 7th Annual Polar Bear Plunge to benefit the Maureen’s Haven network of homeless shelters, which will be held next Saturday, March 1 at Founders Landing in Southold. More information is online here.

• If you have kids in the house who are just itching to get outside and enjoy the last day of winter break, take them to the Morton Wildlife Refuge in Noyac to learn all about their interesting birds with the South Fork Natural History Museum. The program begins at 10 a.m. More information is online here.

And that’s the way things look at dawn’s light here today.
