Good Morning!
• The National Weather Service is issuing advisories and warnings and the Coast Guard urges mariners to stay in port as the nor’easter begins to blow on the East End. According to the National Weather Service’s briefing Thursday evening, peak northeast winds — gusting from 40 to 55 miles per hour —are expected this afternoon through early Sunday, “with the highest gusts across southeastern Connecticut and eastern Long Island.” Widespread moderate coastal flooding is expected during high tides today into Saturday. A Gale Warning on the Long Island Sound, in the Peconics and along the South Shore is in effect through 6 a.m. Friday and a Storm Warning is in effect through 2 a.m. Sunday. Areas under a Storm Warning are expected to have seas of 15 to 20 feet. High rip currents and high surf are also expected on ocean beaches through “at least Saturday.” NWS is also warning of a “marginal risk for excessive rainfall and isolated flash flooding” for eastern Long Island Saturday through Saturday night, continuing through Sunday night for “extreme eastern Long Island,” with 3 to 5 inches of rain possible. We will continue to post updates throughout the storm here.

• In the midst of this storm (apparently), filming for the Netflix series “Women Like Us” is scheduled in the area of Shelter Island’s Crescent Beach today and tomorrow, limiting public access to the beach. According to the town, public access from Stairwell No. 4 and Stairwell No. 10 will be prohibited, along with public parking between Stairwells 2 and 4. Shore Road will remain open to vehicular traffic but “Shelter Island Police Department is authorized to implement and enforce these restrictions as necessary for public safety and to facilitate the filming activities.” So now you’ve been warned, in case you were planning to go to Crescent Beach in a storm. Hey, it’s in the lee of the island.
• Many things that had been scheduled for this weekend have been cancelled (Maritime Festival, Sag Harbor Music Festival, and on and on) but we’re heading to Taps & Corks in Southold tonight from 7 to 10 p.m. for a Hurricane Party with the Beacon staffers in the band John Doe. Come share your story tips. We’ll be all ears and wearing galoshes.
• Editor’s Note: Scratch This! This concert has also been rescheduled, to next Saturday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets already sold will be honored that evening. If you miss us, that’s ok. World renowned pianist Magdalena Baczewska, who has mesmerized audiences throughout America, Europe and Asia, returns to the Jamesport Meeting House on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:30 p.m. for her sixth performance at the historic venue. • If you’ve ever been to a Southold Town Board meeting, you might notice that members of the public are able to talk at length without being asked to stop. This practice is in stark contrast to other neighboring municipalities, which generally have strict time limits on public speaking. But it turns out, Southold does have a time limit on the books — it’s just quite generous and never enforced. The Town Board debated whether to enforce time limits on speaking at its Sept. 22 work session, before landing on a very Southold solution — asking people nicely to respect other peoples’ time. • Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline for public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Suffolk County Water Authority’s North Fork Pipeline. Here’s where to comment, and here’s our ongoing coverage.
• For the first time in four years, Riverhead Town’s tentative budget, unveiled on Thursday, does not pierce the New York State tax cap limit. Get the Details.
• The Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association will host a presentation on Upgrading Your Outdated Septic System at its next meeting on Monday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mattituck Park District headquarters at Veterans Beach. Find Out More.
And that’s the way things look at first light here today. Stay safe out there!
