The United States Submarine Veterans’ Long Island Base met on New Suffolk Beach Sunday, for their annual Tolling of the Boats ceremony honoring their fallen fellow submariners.
The ceremony takes place each April at a monument the Long Island Base erected on April 8, 2000, commemorating the site of the first U.S. Submarine Base in New Suffolk, from 1899 to 1905.
In all, 65 submarines have been lost in service to the United States, along with more than 3,000 men, mostly in the Pacific during World War II.
