William Steeple Davis Trust Seeks Artist-in-Residence Applications
The William Steeple Davis Trust of Orient is now accepting applications for an artist-in-residence for the period of October 15, 2022 through October 1, 2023. Applications are due by June 1, 2022.
The William Steeple Davis Trust artist-in-residence program was established in 1976 under the will of Mr. Davis to “provide a temporary place of abode for persons of good character who are or have been actively engaged in cultural professions, particularly in the arts, and who are without adequate funds to provide for such accommodations.”
Davis, an artist who was born in 1884 and lived until 1961, spent virtually all of his life in Orient, depicting the hamlet in a variety of media for over a half a century.
The endeavors of past residents of the program have included painting, photography, writing, sculpture, poetry, architecture and music.
The modest house and studio are in a quiet location within sight of Orient Harbor, and walking distance of public beaches, open fields and marshes, a post office and and the Orient Country Store. Residence in the house would be possible without a car, but quite inconvenient.
Pets cannot be accommodated and smoking is prohibited in both the house and studio.
Inquiries from persons wishing further information about the residency should be made by mail: The William Steeple Davis Trust, PO Box 371, Orient, NY 11957 or email: wsdtrust@gmail.com.
