Pictured Above: Morning Warning on the Peconics
Good Morning!
• Today starts off with a light east wind turning into a gale by this evening, with a high today around 51 degrees. Rain is expected to begin after 4 p.m., with a southeast wind 22 to 32 miles per hour overnight, gusting as high as 60 mph, with rainfall of 1 to 2 inches possible.
“While the height of the storm is anticipated to impact the county during the evening and overnight hours, I strongly advise our residents to avoid travel as heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts and potential flooding are all possible,” says new Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, who issued a State of Emergency late Monday in anticipation of the storm.
• The East End is under a high wind warning from 6 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Wednesday, a coastal flood warning from 4 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Wednesday, and a flood watch (for non-coastal areas, due to rain) from 6 p.m. tonight until noon tomorrow. Skies are expected to clear Wednesday, but it will be breezy, with a southwest wind 18 to 20 miles per hour, gusting to 39. Thursday will be sunny, with a high near 45.
• Widespread moderate coastal flooding of 2 to 2.5 feet above ground level is expected with this storm, according to the National Weather Service, with large breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet along the oceanfront. The peak time of the storm surge of 4 to 5 feet is expected between high tide cycles Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, but the NWS is forecasting the possibility of “locally major flooding” from Freeport eastward on the South Shore, with particular concern along the eastern Great South Bay from Lindenhurst to Mastic and along the bay side of Fire Island.
