This Morning’s Bulletin — 5.10.23

Good Morning!

• We’re expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 67 degrees and a light west wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 miles per hour in the morning. It will be mostly clear overnight, with a low around 51. Thursday will be sunny, with a high near 74, and Friday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 71.

• The endless vistas of farm fields and waterways on the East End are something we’ve grown so used to seeing that we take them for granted, not realizing that their fate could have been to become an endless montage of strip malls and suburban subdivisions, like much of western Long Island. If you take a look at the timeline the Peconic Land Trust prepared for its 40th Anniversary celebration this year, you’ll realize that none of this is an accident. Read our full story.

• The Mattituck Fire Department and the Mattituck Lions Club host host a New York Blood Center blood drive at the firehouse at 1000 Pike Street in Mattituck this afternoon and evening from 1 to 7 p.m. Appointments are recommended and can be made online here.

• Group for the East End holds an Introductory Birding Walk today, May 10 at Downs Farm Preserve, 23800 Main Road, Cutchogue from noon to 1:30 p.m. It’s a birding basics nature walk in celebration of National Migratory Bird Day this Saturday, recommended for adults and teens ages 12 and up. More info on this free event is at groupfortheeastend.org.

• Southampton Village and the New York League of Conservation Voters host a Water Quality Panel Discussion at Southampton Arts Center this evening, May 10 at 5 p.m. A panel of experts will discuss ongoing and future projects aimed at improving water quality. More info on this free event is at southamptonartscenter.org.

• “Luminous Beauty,” the opening concert for the Rites of Spring Music Festival, will be held this Sunday, May 14 at the Jamesport Meeting House, 1590 Main Road, Jamesport at 5 p.m., featuring Mozart & Beethoven piano quartets with Yezu Woo on violin, Michael Davis on viola, Yi Qun Xu on cello and Paolo Bartolani on piano. More information is online at ritesmusic.org.
