Riverhead Closes Hotel Hearing, OLA on Crossroads, When the Earth Speaks, Remembering Wengenroth, Juneteenth

• We’re expecting patchy fog before 7 a.m. today, with otherwise mostly sunny skies, with a high temperature near 92 degrees but eat index values as high as 96. • The Riverhead Town Board closed a public hearing on the site plan and special permit application for a new, five-story hotel adjacent to the town’s new Town Square on East Main Street Wednesday evening, after hearing two-and-a-half hours of mixed and at times contentious comment. • This weekend, OLA of Eastern Long Island and Guild Hall in East Hampton will present “Cruce de Caminos (Crossroads),” a new series of short plays developed and performed by members of Long Island’s Latino community. Read More.
• North Fork resident Joanna Lane has loaned Greenport’s Floyd Memorial Library a rare collection of more than 50 works by the lithographer Stow Wengenroth, who painter Andrew Wyeth once called “the greatest American artist working in black and white,” and his creative extended family, which are on view through this Sunday, June 14. • Tomorrow, June 13 at 5 p.m., the Vista Quartet from the Yale School of Music will perform two original compositions by student composers at Yale at the North Fork Arts Center, “When the Earth Speaks,” on stage with a cinematographic visual journey through BarTur Award photographs from 86 countries, exploring the world’s response to climate change. • The East End is filled this coming week with events celebrating the newest national holiday — Juneteenth — which marks the date in 1865 when enslaved residents of Galveston, Texas learned of the Emancipation Proclamation — more than two years after it issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863.
