To the Editor:
Like clean water? I just heard Congressional candidate NY-01 John Avlon talk about clean water, protecting our aquifer, protecting coastlines. Our (new) district extends from Orient and Montauk along the south shore to Westhampton Beach in Southampton and along the north shore to Head of the Harbor in Smithtown. All those beautiful beaches and lovely harbors – at risk of floods and pollution.
On Avlon’s mention of the environment, his 10 year old son who was petting the host’s dog, jumped up to stand by his dad. “We have to stop Project 2025 and protect our climate” he told us. We cheered. Wow. The kids really care about climate!
Avlon’s goal is to serve on the Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee: to make it tax deductible for families and businesses to make their properties more resilient, to invest in beach renourishment, to develop clean energy technology right here on Long Island.
He wants NY-01 to benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act – President Biden’s historic investment in American renewables to drive down polluting emissions 40% by 2030, the cause of warming oceans, increased rainfall and storm surges.
But short-sighted Republicans are trying to block this. And Project 2025 plans for a future Republican president to nullify any executive orders on climate and “eradicate climate change references from absolutely everywhere.”
Why you ask? In politics, money makes the world go ‘round. If you want to keep your job you do the bidding of your big donors, even the polluters who want to slow our clean energy transition (source: League of Conservation Donors). What about a livable planet?
I’m voting for common sense problem-solver John Avlon, who has pledged to expand the Child Tax Credit, restore the State and Local tax deduction, protect reproductive freedoms, social security and medicare.
