A fire this afternoon at the Driftwood Cove Apartments in Greenport has left five residents displaced, with one transported to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital for smoke inhalation.
The Southold Town Police Department says it received reports of a fire at the Driftwood Cove Apartments, located at 1000 Ninth Street in Greenport, at around 2:30 p.m.
“Southold Town Police officers and Greenport Fire Department personnel responded and located a fire inside Unit B20,” according to police. “An occupant was assisted out of the apartment and transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.”
Greenport Fire Department’s Standard Hose Company “made an aggressive interior attack, locating the seat of the fire in a bedroom and knocking it down,” according to a post by the company’s Instagram page, while GFD’s Phoenix Hook & Ladder Company 1 conducted roof operations on scene.
“The fire caused significant damage to one apartment and smoke and water damage to an adjacent unit,” according to town police. “A third unit did not appear to sustain damage. All three units were determined to be unsafe for occupancy by the Southold Town Building Department pending further inspection. Five residents were displaced as a result of the fire.”
The apartment complex is outside the boundary of the Village of Greenport.
Town police say representatives from the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross “responded and assisted the residents with finding temporary housing” and the Southold Town Police Detective Division, along with Suffolk County Arson Detectives, are investigating the cause of the fire.
The Greenport Fire Department initially responded to the fire, and the Southold Fire Department also responded to the scene and assisted. The Greenport Fire Department says it called Southold for a Rapid Intervention Team — a specialized team on standby at working fires to assist if any firefighters in the initial response team are in distress — but Southold’s team switched to fire operations, “searching the attic spaces to ensure no spread of fire.”
“As always, Greenport FD’s ambulance along with Stony Brook Medics assisted throughout this call.
The East Marion Fire Department provided standby coverage at the Greenport Fire Department during the incident.
“Thank you to all who helped keep this fire from becoming a much worse situation,” said the Greenport Fire Department.
This is a developing story. We will update this post with further information as it becomes available.
