Southold Adopts Public Safety Resolution, More Trains for the South Fork, Peconic Landing Call for Sculptures

• We’re expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 78 degrees and a northwest wind 6 to 9 miles per hour, becoming west in the afternoon. It will be partly cloudy overnight, with a low around 65. Thursday will be partly sunny, with a high near 79, and Friday will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 79 and a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m.
• The Southold Town Board unanimously adopted a resolution Tuesday evening, Aug. 25 outlining how town police will respond to outside law enforcement agencies acting within the town’s boundaries, after a series of chaotic immigration raids on the East End over the course of the past year. • Governor Kathy Hochul announced a series of service and infrastructure improvements on Tuesday for the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. The upgrades will come in two phases. In the first, the track siding at the Amagansett station will be extended, and in the second a permanent second platform will be constructed at the Hampton Bays station. Read More.
• A final public hearing on the North Fork Pipeline by the Suffolk County Water Authority will be held this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Riverhead Free Library. Written comments will also be accepted through at least Sept. 11 — an extension of that deadline is likely, says SCWA CEO Jeff Szabo. Find Out More.
• On Tuesday, Southold Town honored Government Liaison Gwynn Schroeder, who is stepping down from her post on Aug. 31. Ms. Schroeder served as a legislative aide to Town Supervisor Al Krupski for 11 years during his tenure at the Suffolk County Legislature, before taking the position with the town. “She really cares about the community and fit in very well here,” said Mr. Krupski, who presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation for her “lifelong commitment to environmental stewardship, local preservation and excellence in public service.”
• The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that the Exit 63N ramp from westbound Sunrise Highway (Route 27) to northbound Old Riverhead Road (County Road 31) in Westhampton, will be closed beginning at 10 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, Aug. 26, until 5 a.m. the following morning for pavement work.
