• We’re expecting mostly cloudy skies this morning to gradually clear by the afternoon, with a high around 85 degrees and a southwest wind around 14 miles per hour. High rip currents are expected on the East End’s ocean beaches through this evening. We’re expecting increasing clouds overnight, with a low around 64. Friday will also start out mostly cloudy, with skies clearing and a high near 76. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 74.
• The 45 people who perished on the Fishing Vessel Pelican 75 years ago were remembered in a ceremony at the Montauk Point Lighthouse on Sept. 5, including family members of those lost that day and the launch of a new special edition of Tom Clavin’s book recounting the tragedy. Read More.
As public awareness of the North Fork’s housing affordability crisis deepens, the Southold Town Board on Tuesday heard a comprehensive update on major code changes the town says need to be implemented before it begins spending the $8 million-plus it has collected in its Community Housing Fund. • The Mattituck Park District hosts a New York Blood Center blood drive at its headquarters in Veterans Park at 11280 Peconic Bay Boulevard from Noon to 6 p.m. today. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments can also be made online here.
