To the Editor:
As a community that prides itself on its rich history, picturesque landscapes, and tight-knit neighborhoods, it is essential to consider the values that have shaped Southold over the years. With the recent influx of new residents to our town on the North Fork over the past years, it is important to reflect on what drew each of us here and how we can preserve the essence of Southold in the face of changing political dynamics.

The recent trend of individuals changing their primary residency to Southold solely for the purpose of influencing elections based on party affiliation is concerning. This undermines the principles of democracy and dilutes the power of local voices in shaping the future of our town. It is crucial that we uphold the tradition of voting for the candidate who best represents the values and interests of Southold, rather than being swayed by partisan politics.
Southold has always been a place where individuals are valued for their character, integrity, and dedication to serving the community. Our town has a long-standing tradition of putting the person first and foremost, rather than allowing political affiliations to dictate our decisions. This approach has allowed us to maintain a sense of unity and common purpose that transcends party lines.
However, in recent years, we have observed a shift in the political landscape of Southold. There has been a noticeable trend of outside interests attempting to influence our local elections by encouraging residents to prioritize party affiliation over the qualities and values of individual candidates. This tactic not only undermines the democratic process but also threatens to erode the unique spirit of Southold that has made our town a special place to call home.
As we prepare for the upcoming elections, I urge each of you to consider the candidates based on their merits, qualifications, and commitment to serving the best interests of Southold. Let us continue to uphold the values that have defined our community for generations and ensure that our town remains a beacon of democracy, integrity, and unity.
Sincerely,
Jason Taggart
Southold
