The legendary author Peter Matthiessen devoted his life to voyages of discovery, chronicling the wild places and ancient traditions that reveal humanity’s profound bond with nature—and the environmental and Indigenous justice struggles that continue to concern us today.
It is in that spirit that the Peter Matthiessen center is welcoming two inspiring events to the Southampton Arts Center on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The first is a book talk with journalist and Now Voyager magazine founder Nicholas Niarchos, who will read excerpts from his award-winning book The Elements of Power: A Story of War, Technology, and the Dirtiest Supply Chain on Earth at 4 p.m. The book was a nominee for the Orwell Prize for Political Writing this year.
In the book, Mr. Niarchos “delivers a deeply reported account of the global scramble for the metals that fuel the “green” energy transition,” according to the organizers. “Tracing supply chains from Central Africa to Beijing, he reveals how the fight over battery minerals is reshaping geopolitics and exposing devastating human and environmental consequences despite best intentions.
The talk will take place from 4 to 5 p.m. at SAC’s theater, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing in the gallery. This event is free and open to the public, although advance reservations are required. To reserve your space, email info@matthiessencenter.org.
Following the book talk, SAC hosts the East End launch of Now Voyager, a new print magazine of international reporting, longform storytelling, photography, and art.
The launch will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in SAC’s historic sculpture garden. Admission is free but RSVPs are required to attend; you can RSVP by emailing friends@nowvoyagermag.org.
