Good Morning!

• We’re expecting sunny skies today, with a high temperature near 31 degrees but wind chill values between 5 and 15, with a light and variable wind. There’s a 20 percent chance of overnight snow, with temperatures in the low 30s, and a 40 percent chance of rain and snow before 11 a.m. Christmas Eve, with a high near 41. Christmas Day will be mostly sunny, with a high near 38.

• New York Governor Kathy Hochul again vetoed a bill reinstating state recognition for the Montaukett Indian Nation over the weekend, stating that she believes “The Montauketts have not yet demonstrated that they meet the requirements necessary for recognition.” The tribe was stripped of its state recognition in a dubious 1910 ruling in the case Pharaoh v. Benson, related to Arthur Benson’s efforts to acquire Montaukett Indian Nation homelands in Montauk, at Indian Field, a traditional Montaukett burial ground overlooking Lake Montauk. This is the sixth time Ms. Hochul and her predecessor, Andrew Cuomo, have vetoed this bill, carried by the East End’s lawmakers, who believe the Montauketts have fulfilled the state’s requirements.

• The holiday season is a tough time for the many North Forkers facing housing insecurity, and there’s been a flurry of talk about how to create more affordable housing here in the weeks leading into the end of the year. Read More.

• The East Hampton Food Pantry’s annual Polar Bear Plunge at Main Beach in East Hampton will be held on New Year’s Day — Registration begins at 11:30 a.m., and the plunge will be held at 1 p.m. Find Out More.
