“The Guys” Processes Sept. 11, Pride of Baltimore, Our Housing Crisis, Railroad Festival

• There’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms today, mainly between 11 a.m.and 5 p.m. , with mostly cloudy skies and a high temperature near 80 degreesn. Winds will be calm in the morning, becoming wind becoming west around 5 miles per hour in the afternoon. It will be mostly cloudy overnight, with a low around 66 and a 20 pecent chance of showers and thunderstormms before 11 p.m. Saturday will be mostly sunny, with a high near 78, and Sunday will be sunny, with a high near 82.
• A new production of “The Guys,” the story of a FDNY Captain working to eulogize the men he lost on September 11, 2001, is taking the stage at the North Fork Arts Center in Greenport next month. “My intent was initially to do this as a memorial for the brothers, but as I got a little distance from my firehouse I realized I also wanted to prove to the guys still here that I have the same pain the other survivors were having,” says former FDNY firefighter Kevin Shea, who stars in the production. • The Baltimore Clipper topsail schooner Pride of Baltimore (pictured above) docked at Greenport’s Commercial Dock on Thursday and will be in port through Sunday, Aug. 30 for deck tours and day sails. Find Out More.
• The Railroad Museum of Long Island holds its annual Riverhead Railroad Festival this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a day filled with exhibitions of railroad history, a LIRR simulator, train songs, refreshments and toy locomotive races. Find Out More.
• The North Fork Civics will hold a panel discussion on the housing crisis, “Our Housing Crisis: Local Voices” with a parent, an educator, a firefighter, health care professional and a small business owner on Monday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. at CAST in Southold. “Rather than a panel of “experts”, we’re turning this over to a diverse group of citizens most affected by the lack of affordable housing on the North Fork,” says Tony Asch, a board member of the Orient Association who is working on the forum. “They’re best positioned to explain to our community and leaders just how the housing situation affects them and ripples through the entire town: parents, businesses and existing homeowners.” Find Out More.
• Also on Aug. 31 at 6:30 p.m., the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association will hear about how to handle code enforcement concerns with Southold Town Attorney Ben Johnson and Code Enforcement Officer Lester Baylinson at Veterans Memorial Park on Peconic Bay Boulevard in Mattituck. Find Out More.
